Don’t Plant the Wrong Seed

Parents, don’t plant weeds and expect to get roses. When my children were young I taught them NOT to share (I know – Bad Mommie). My reasoning was if everyone kept their hands on their own stuff, we would not have any problems. Houston, we have a problem – They still don’t like to share. They never share material things (clothes – shoes –jewelry) and they are very very cautious about sharing emotions (love – compassion, etc.). I have found that it is much easier to provide parameters for the desired behavior. For example, share your crayons, but make sure that you get them back.

Be mindful of the following phrases (weeds) because they can have lifelong implications in the social and emotional development of your child:

Be a man
Don’t ask too many questions
Don’t ask “Why”
Home Business (Don’t share out of the home what happens in the home) This one is very important because a “child abuser” considers the act “home business”

I’m sure that there are many more “Weed Nurturing” phrases so please note that children take what you say and apply it to all situations. If you want a rose, plant the seeds from which roses grow.

Parents, some decisions about your child’s body should not be made until they are old enough to give “legitimate” input. Legitimate implies that they realize all of the medical, emotional, and societal implications.

Piercing your daughters ears at the ripe old of 3 months, I’m OK with that, reason being they forget that the earrings are there and never mess with them (less chance for infection). But, piercing your son’s ears at the same age for the same reason – Scandalous!!!

Piercing anything but the ears-Security!!!!!!!

Tattooing a child, male or female, at any age – Somebody call child protective services!!!

Fake nails on a child before High School – You must have money to burn!!!!

Use your words – Not those!!!!

Certain words should not come out of the “mouths of babes.” They are inappropriate in and out of the home environment.

Fart

Lie

Shut up

Stupid

Dumb

Butt

What (When beckoned)

Yeah (When responding)

The following gestures are passive aggressive forms of disrespect and should not be tolerated.

Arm Folding (when being addressed)

Eye rolling

Lips poked out

Sucking teeth

As you may recall from a previous post, you must replace inappropriate behaviors with appropriate behaviors. The same applies to words and gestures. For example, you can substitute “fart” with “pass gas.” Be mindful not to substitute one inappropriate word with another inappropriate word. For example, don’t use “retarded” as a substitute for “stupid.”

Are we there yet?

Parents, do you ever wonder why your child keeps asking “Is dinner ready yet”, “Can I go outside now”, “Are we there yet.” It’s because you give them responses like “One more minute” or “Almost.” Young children have no concept of time. Your “wait one minute” is actually closer to 15 or 20 minutes and your “we’re almost there” is probably 40 miles. Your “one more minutes” are certainly not the same every day. Your kids are confused and so they keep asking and asking and asking.

The good news is that it’s an easy fix. Give them points of reference. Tell Nikki that the cookies will be ready when the big hand gets on the six. If you’re in the car, tell them that we will be at grandma’s house when both of the hands on the clock are on the 12 (always bring a battery operated clock on the long trips).

The elementary school where I worked had a basketball team. During the championship game, the score was tied and we had the ball with 20 seconds left on the clock. The coach called time out and said “Maria, we only have 20 seconds left, you take the last shot.” Maria dribbled the ball for 23 seconds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After the game, the coach said “Maria why didn’t you take the shot?” She said “20 seconds is fast, Huh.”
