I asked my daughter if the guy she was seeing asked her to be his girlfriend. She said “Does anyone do that anymore? We’re together.” Is being “together” a synonym for exclusivity? What liberties or privileges accompany “hooking up?’ What do those terms mean?

It is crucial that we help our children translate this new “language of love” into something that clearly identifies the parameters and boundaries of the relationship.

Here is what I told my children regarding the best friend status “I will be your best friend, but you can’t be mine.” There is only one relationship that you should have with your children and that is Mommy and Daddy. They, on the other hand, can have multiple relationships with you (best friend, dance partner, gopher), but you are the parent and all that the role entails. NEVER STEP OUTSIDE OF YOUR ROLE AS THE PARENT. When you step outside of your parent role, you give up the right to say “YOU DID WHAT?” OR “HECK NO WE CAN’T TALK ABOUT IT.” You are not equals!
